How Long Does a Permanent Makeup Appointment Really Take? (And Why You Shouldn't Want It Faster)

How long is the appointment?

I get this question constantly. And I get it—you're busy. You want to know if you can fit this into your life, how much time to block off, whether you need to rearrange your whole day. It's a fair question.

But here's what I've learned: the real question isn't how long the appointment takes. It's why it takes that long.

And the answer matters way more than you think.

What to Expect: The Timeline

Let me be straight with you. A full eyebrow permanent makeup appointment at BrowLady takes 2 to 2.5 hours on average, and we allocate 3 hours for your session.

Here's what that breaks down to:

Consultation & Design (30-45 minutes)

We start with a complimentary consultation where we map out your brows. I'm not just drawing something and saying "here you go." We're analyzing your facial structure, discussing what you want, what will work with your face shape, and building a design together. You approve it. You love it. We don't move forward until you're 100% confident in what we're about to do.

This is the non-negotiable step. And it takes time because it should.

Numbing (15-60+ minutes)

Here's where most people get impatient—and here's where I won't budge.

Comfort is not negotiable to me. If your skin needs 20 minutes to numb, we wait 20 minutes. If it needs 60 minutes, we wait 60 minutes. If we're ready to start and you're still not fully numb, we don't power through your pain. We numb again and wait longer.

I know this sounds like I'm wasting your time. I'm not. I'm protecting your experience and your results.

The Actual Procedure (45-75 minutes)

Once you're numb and we're both satisfied with the design, the real work begins. This is where I'm depositing pigment into your skin with precision, building your brows layer by layer. It's methodical. It's intentional. It's not rushed.

Final Review & Aftercare (15-20 minutes)

Before you leave, we review the work together. I explain exactly how to care for your brows over the next 10 days. You walk out with complimentary numbing cream, detailed aftercare instructions, and the products you need to protect your investment and heal beautifully.

Why Time in the Chair Isn't Wasted Time

I used to run a multi-technician brow studio in Scottsdale. I know the business pressure to move clients through quickly. Faster appointments = more revenue, right?

Wrong. At least not in a way that actually builds a sustainable business.

Here's what I learned: rushing creates problems.

Problem 1: Bad Design Approval

If you're hurrying through the mapping phase, you miss things. Asymmetry. Placement issues. A shape that doesn't actually work with your face. Then the client sees the healed result and realizes it's not what they wanted. Now you're dealing with corrections, touch-ups, unhappy clients, and requests for refunds. You didn't save time—you lost it.

Problem 2: Inadequate Numbing = Client Pain

If a client is in pain during the procedure, their body responds. Tension. Flinching. Blood flow increases. That's a problem for pigment retention and healing. A client who experiences pain doesn't come back. They tell their friends about it. You lose referrals.

Problem 3: Swelling & Bleeding Creates Permanent Mistakes

Here's the science: if you work over swelling, you're depositing pigment in an area that's temporarily enlarged. Once the swelling goes down, your brows are wider than they should be. If you work over bleeding skin, the blood dilutes the pigment and irritates the tissue, which means scabbing, poor retention, and an uneven result.

So I stop. I wait. If a client's skin starts swelling or bleeding, we pause and let the skin settle. This might add 10-15 minutes to the appointment. But it saves the entire result.

The Real Cost of Rushing

I've seen the alternative. I've heard from clients who went to artists who pushed through—artists who said "don't worry, we'll fix it at your touch-up" or "this is normal, it'll look better when it heals."

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. And the client spent their money and their time on a gamble.

At BrowLady, there's no gamble. There's precision. There's patience. There's someone who cares more about your result than about squeezing one more appointment into the schedule.

Why Comfort Matters Beyond the Chair

Here's something people don't talk about: your comfort during the procedure affects your healing. Stressed, tense skin heals differently than relaxed skin. Pain triggers inflammation. Rushing creates anxiety.

So every part of this process—the consultation, the numbing, the design approval, the procedure itself—is designed to keep you relaxed and confident.

And when you leave, you get complimentary numbing cream, detailed aftercare instructions, and the products you need to support your healing.

The Timeline Isn't the Point—The Result Is

I'm going to be real with you: if you need this done in 45 minutes, I'm not your artist. There are artists who will do it. But I won't compromise on design, comfort, or skin integrity just to fit you into a slot.

What I will do is give you permanent makeup that looks professional, heals beautifully, and makes you feel confident every single day.

That takes time. And it's worth it.
